From 1990 to 2009 Delroy Grant, known as the Night Stalker, terrorised South East London, raping or sexually assaulting mainly elderly women over 200 times. There will never be a full list of victims because some are just too traumatised to come forward.
The Metropolitan Police Service had an operation dedicated to finding this monster, but for years their enquiries were fruitless, until in 2009 they made a near random arrest and there was a DNA match - Grant didn't use condoms. In March this year Grant was convicted of multiple rapes. He was sentenced to serve a minimum of 27 years in prison.
Why did it take so long? Well it seems they couldn't bring themselves to acknowledge a simple fact: Grant is a black man.
Here is the photofit they released:
Fear of being called racist caused them to produce a racially ambiguous image which shows none of the typical African features such as a brown skin, thick lips and flattened nose. In fact the image looks more like a white man than a black man.
Now bear in mind that the police had DNA from the Night Stalker as early as 1992 and this told them that the man there were looking for was of Afro-Caribbean ethnicity. This notwithstanding they dully produced an image of the man they were looking for which makes the suspect look like a white man!
It's impossible to say how much sooner Grant could have been caught if only the police had issued a proper likeness.
